Services for Students: Communities of Practice

The University?s Academic Plan and White Paper prioritize academic quality and, specifically, strategies aimed ? directly and indirectly ? at enhancing the student experience at York. To that end, developing ?Communities of Practice? was proposed as a strategy for enhancing existing institutional capacity; the first two will be focused on Academic Advising and Peer Mentoring.

Initiative Summary Communities of Practice facilitate dialogue on issues of shared interest to student services personnel, build relationships and creat networks.? These outcomes are identified in the literature (Seifert, 2011) as contributors to increased staff engagement in fostering student success and furthering the institution?s academic mission.? They are also cited as a covert strategy for moving towards more ?student-focused? structures (regardless of whether those structures are centralized, decentralized, or ?hub and spoke?).

Most immediately, the following outcomes will be pursued:? conduct regular meetings with participants from across campus; define roles and responsibilities related to each service;? embrace theoretical knowledge;? adopt best practices;? and, invest in developing measurements of success.??

Aligning to the Vision of PRASE

?

The purpose of this project is to better leverage the significant human resource investment York currently makes in delivering student services.? Related objectives include: enhanced service, increased institutional intelligence, improved morale, and ? ultimately ? an enhanced student experience.
Timeline

?

In October, 2011, the Chairs and key leaders involved in the two relevant sub-committees of Retention Council (Academic Advising and Peer Mentoring) were approached individually and asked to participate.? All were enthusiastic and agreed to leverage their personal networks to foster the Communities.

On January 5, 2012, a group meeting of colleagues invested in Academic Advising and/or Peer Mentoring was convened; on January 10, 2012, a meeting of the sub-committee on Peer Advising was convened.? The Academic Advising sub-committee will be meeting in February, 2012.

Leadership

?

Janet Morrison, Project Director, PRASE is leading this project with functional leadership provided by the Vice President, Students and academic leadership provided by the Associate Vice President, Teaching & Learning.??
Project Tracking? On track.

Is local personal injury advice a better option - Personal Injury Solicitor

Is it important to use a local personal injury lawyer ?

The personal injury legal market is becoming increasingly dominated by the largest companies that have the biggest budgets. Maybe this is just the way of the world, but the way it tends to work in the injury claims market is through very heavy advertising and offer of significant inducements to those who sign up.

The injury market is dominated by firms who spend large amounts of money on tv advertising and an increasing budget on online activities, including pay per click. The inducements offered to clients who have cases accepted can be as high as ?1,000.00 cashback or an IPAD. But is it a good idea to sign up for legal advice just based on who are the biggest company with the biggest budget ? With legal advice, surely it matters that you get the right advice ?

Well, for some kinds of personal injury cases, these can be largely straightforward, particularly in terms of establishing legal liability. The most obvious example of this would be whiplash ? most whiplash cases involve a rear end shunt, and where that happens, the driver and passengers in the car in front, if they suffer a whiplash injury, will generally succeed with a claim. In that sense, it generally tends to matter little whether you use a big law firm or not, you are in pretty safe hands.

However, if you have a catastrophic injury or a nasty injury at work, or perhaps a claim for medical negligence, these are not straightforward personal injury claims. It is important, in those circumstances, generally to have an expert in those types of claims, and we would argue, to be able to meet with your solicitor regularly and develop the level of trust and confidence necessary between solicitor and client for these types of claims.

One firm which takes it?s local client base very seriously is Lloyd Green personal injury solicitors, who are based in Essex. The firm deliberately markets itself as the personal injury lawyers to go to in Essex. Unlike many of the other personal injury websites, the firm?s website also has bios for all it?s team of lawyers, is you get to see and find out about the specialist you will be dealing with. This makes a lot of sense.

So, all personal injury claims and all personal injury lawyers are not the same.

Cajun Seafood Pasta w/ Creamy Tomato Sauce | Brown Sugar

When I knew I wanted to make this dish, it took me 2 weeks to figure out what type of sauce I wanted to make with it (?{singing}?Caught up in the rapture of love? listening to Anita Baker).? I didn?t know if I wanted to make a white wine sauce, white sauce, vodka sauce, marinara sauce, or what! I was looking through a few cookbooks of mine determined to find the perfect sauce or at least an idea that I could use and make my own. And guess who came to the rescue? Food Bloggers Dalai Lama, Ree Drummond AKA The Pioneer Woman. I took her simple tomato pasta sauce and added my own cajun flare to it.

Now let me tell you about this sauce. I wanted to drink this sauce. I am very critical of my food. You will hardly ever hear me give myself kudos on my food. But this dish right ya?ll, I say this dish right hear ya?ll will make you say ?damn? on the first bite. This is absolutely one of my most favorite pasta dishes?EVER! I?m not even a huge pasta person, but it is very good. This is another one of those meals that you can make for that special person. Now if I say something is good and is one of my most favorite meals EVER, you have to trust me.

Another thing about this pasta dish, you can add whatever meat you want. If you are not a huge seafood person you can use just chicken and sausage. Or just chicken. It is very versatile for the picky food eaters. If you are not a pork person, you can use smoked turkey or chicken sausage. This is a great foundation for you to make into your own unique dish.

?

Thanks again Ree!

Sauce recipe partially adapted from The Pioneer Woman

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. cooked shrimp
  • 1 lb. sea scallops
  • 8 oz. lump crab meat
  • 1 1/2 lbs. andoullie sausage, chopped
  • 1 lb. linguine, cooked al dente
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • SAUCE
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil, and more for the pan
  • 1 small white onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 15 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 2 c. diced tomatoes
  • 1 c. heavy cream
  • 5 oz. Parmesan reggiano cheese
  • 1 tbsp. red crushed pepper
  • 2 tsp. red pepper
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp.onion powder
  • 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp. oregano
  • 5 fresh basil leaves chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 55 minutes
  • Servings: 8
  • Difficulty: easy

Directions

Direction for sauce

1. In a medium-sized pot, heat the oil and melt the butter at the same time. Once the butter melts , add the onion and garlic and saute for 5 minutes.

2. Add both cans of the tomato sauce and allow to simmer for 15 minutes so it can thicken. Once that has happened, add the cup of cream and stir to make sure it is evenly mixed. Begin to add all seasonings (i.e. red crushed pepper,? red pepper, garlic and onion powder, Italian seasonings, oregano, basil, and salt and pepper). Stir well and lastly add the cheese and set the heat on simmer and repeatedly stir to make sure the sauce doesn't stick to the pan.

NOW START TO BOIL WATER FOR YOUR LINGUINE. WHEN THE LINGUINE IS FINISHED AND DRAINED, DRIZZLE WITH OLIVE OIL SO THE NOODLES WON'T STICK AND DRY OUT.

3. In a separate skillet, drizzle with olive oil and turn to medium high heat. Once the skillet is hot add the sea scallops and sear on each side for about 3 minutes until golden brown. Once the scallops finish cooking, turn to a plate and set aside.

4. Using the same skillet drizzle with more olive oil? and add the sausage and shrimp. Cook for about 10 minutes. Now bring the scallops back to the skillet joining the shrimp and sausage and add the crab meat. Cook all the meat together for about 5 minutes then turn to the sauce and allow to simmer or 10 minutes.

5. Plate with linguine and spoon a healthy helping of the sauce and serve.

Non-profit sector has a lot to learn from for-profit companies: Great ...

The language and terminology used in for-profit companies and not-for-profits organisations is often quite different. We don?t usually think about the term ?profit?, yet there is a ?gain? in the non-profit sector, but it is measured against different criteria.

Using the concept of the service-profit chain, this post translates the ideas so that excellent leadership, satisfied employees and great teams create loyal customers, that leads to ?profit?. For you this may mean things like changed lives, improved educational outcomes, increased funding and growth.

1. What is profit?
profit: The positive gain from an investment or business operation after subtracting for all expenses. Opposite of loss.

It?s an equation that looks like this:

Business operation - expenses = profit

There is always a cost to doing business ? including paying employees, goods/products and taxes and administrative fees. If the income is less than the these costs, the business runs at a loss. if higher, there is a profit ? that is the purpose of doing business

2. What is ?profit? for non-profit organisations?
In business the concept of profit is straightforward, but in the non-profit sector it?s not so clear. Organisations such as schools, aid agencies and churches provide a service to the community that is evident in improved outcomes for those served.

Schools: Young people receive a great education that provides a foundation for the future

Aid organisations: Funds are raised that are translated into programs that improve life outcomes

Churches: Lives are positively transformed and relationships strengthened which leads to growth and increased participation.

3. How does the service-profit chain work in non-profits?
In business, the service-profit chain establishes the link between profitability and the day-to-day operation of the business.

Great LEADERSHIP results in
Satisfied EMPLOYEES, who
Become LOYAL TEAMS that
Increases PRODUCTIVITY and
Provide a VALUE-ADD so the
Customers are SATISFIED and they
Become LOYAL CUSTOMERS which results in
Increasing PROFITS

There is a link between the way the leaders relate to their teams, and the way teams relate to the ?customers?. When leaders focus on their teams and create a culture that values loyalty, productivity and satisfaction, then this culture becomes translated to their teams.

4. Leaders make the difference at every level
There is an interesting link between loyal team members and loyal customers ? when a leader focuses on the team the team will mirror the same culture, positively or negatively to the customers. There is a direct correlation between how a leader engages with their team and how the team engages with the customer, or the people they serve.

Think about these questions:
1. What is profit in your work?
2. Who are your ?customers? and what makes them ?loyal??
3. What can you practically do to improve their satisfaction?
4. In providing service how do you add value?
5. What will increase the productivity of your team?
6. How do you recognise and reward employee loyalty?
7. As a leader what do you need to focus on to have satisfied employees?

Culture is contagious. Make sure yours is worth catching.

Saipem sees oil industry hit by Europe woes

MILAN (Reuters) - Europe's largest oil services firm Saipem expects an economic and financial crisis in Europe to weigh on the global oil industry with delays in investments and big gas projects.

The group said on Monday investments by oil companies this year were still seen above those in 2011 and confirmed its 2012 targets including for a net profit of about 1 billion euros, thanks to a solid order backlog.

However, European woes "are creating a climate of growing uncertainty regarding the global economy, which in turn impacts the timing of the awarding and start of projects planned by oil companies," Saipem said in a statement on its quarterly results.

The crisis has weighed on gas demand in Europe, delaying projects such as the giant Shtokman development in Russia and the Galsi pipeline in Algeria where Saipem is involved.

On the positive, Saipem said several projects in Nigeria, Angola, Brazil, the Middle East and South East Asia were expected to be awarded in the second half of the year.

Saipem, whose advanced offshore fleet makes it well placed to grab growing investments in ultra deep waters and other harsh environments, said second-quarter net profit rose 7.6 percent to 242 million euros, a touch below a 246 million euro consensus.

Contracts in Saudi Arabia, Russia, Nigeria in March and June contributed to a 6.3 billion euro order intake in the first half of the year, a 5 percent rise from a year earlier.

The oil services industry is late-cycle as it relies on multi-year contracts with oil companies which make their investment decisions based on oil price trends.

After the release of the results shares in the Milan-based group, majority controlled by Eni, pared gains. At 1205 GMT, shares in Saipem were 1.4 percent lower at 37.2 euros, below all-time high of 39.9 euros hit in mid-March.

Officials: Uganda Ebola outbreak kills 14

The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Circumcision advocate tackles the cringe factor

It?s an idea that can make a grown man cringe, and no one knows better than Angelo Kaggwa. But Kaggwa finally got circumcised last year and immediately reduced his risk of HIV infection dramatically. Now, he wants everyone to know: It?s not so bad.

    5. Most teens use condoms, but sex ed cuts raise worries

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.

"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.

Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.

On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.

Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.

Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories. There have been isolated cases since, such as in 2007 when an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola killed at least 37 people in Bundibugyo, a remote district close to the Congolese border, but none as deadly as in 2000.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A CDC factsheet on Ebola says the disease is "characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding may be seen in some patients."

Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.

The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person, or objects that have been contaminated with infected secretions. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.

In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.

Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.

"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."

The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.

"Their lives are at stake," he said.

Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

Music Goes Mobile: Making Music on The Phone

http://bit.ly/NPaD25

There is a faint hypnotic tune ringing hauntingly in the distance. It is pulling you into a blissful trance-like state; slowly it blends with your senses and takes you into this inexplicable high, up to the seventh heaven. Can?t figure out where it is coming from? Look closely; there is no sign of an instrument nearby. For all you know, this idyllic piece of music may be coming from a smartphone.

With approximately 4 billion cell phones around the World (inclusive of 25 million iPhones), there is a lot of potential in mobile creativity, that is, using mobile phones for a host of unimaginable purposes. Perhaps, it all started when Ge Wang, a Professor of music at Stanford CCRMA, with an aim of bringing about a ?mobile renaissance?, founded the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra, popularly named MoPhO. Says Wang,

?It levels the playing ground in some ways because everyone has a cell phone. Further, they are communication devices. So inherently, they connect people.?

Transform the multi-touch screens, built-in accelerometers, built-in microphones, GPS, data networks and computation into powerful and yet mobile chamber meta-instruments ? transforming the phone device into a grand instrument is not as complicated as it just sounded. Devise a quick code and the cell phone turns into ?one of the most intimate and personal devices man has ever known, but also one of the most ubiquitous.? In 2008, Wang co founded a company called Sonic Mule (SMULE), exploring interactive sonic media. With this began an array of music making mobile applications. Not your regular touch and play apps, but more comprehensive, interactive, sound centred applications that pave a promising way for music making applications.

http://bit.ly/NPaGem

The trendsetter in this category is Ocarina, an app that converts the iPhone into a 12,000 year old clay wind instrument called ocarina. The app enables users to blow into their smartphone devices? microphone to play flute like music. Available for 99 cents on App Store, Ocarina creates sounds in real time, based on gestures, tilt, wind input and finger placement on the four holes displayed on the touchscreen. Another part of the app shows the globe of the world with glowing points of light on different parts of the globe, each of which showed someone somewhere who had just used the app. You tap on a glowing point and a tune played by someone in that part of the world will be heard by you, wherever you are.

?This is connecting people musically that was not possible with formal performance,? says the founder. Perhaps this is the first instrument that connects and lets others having the same instruments hear what they are playing. ?One of the most magical programs?, as put by the NY Times writer David Pogue, Ocarina is among those very few music making apps revolutionising the mobile applications category.

I have listed below some other apps in the mobile music making category that have gained widespread admiration, owing to their unique features:

http://bit.ly/OvJiRF

iBone: It is a phone trombone which lets the user touch or blow into the mic to play a sound. Pitch can be changed by sliding the finger on the touchscreen and volume can also be adjusted. This app is available on Android as well.

Gliss: Gliss goes beyond the method of music making, uniting different human senses and skills. It lets you create music by drawing on your smartphone. The app sort of lets you draw what you?d like to hear. There are 5 colours in the palette, each representing a different type of sound. A cursor on the screen interprets your drawings. Tilting the phone left and right enables you to play the music backward or forward, fast or slow. The tilting also leads to the drawings falling to the either side, thus changing the sound?s pitch.

http://bit.ly/O9rBd7

Drum Meister: If you are someone who likes loud music and huge instruments, then this iPhone music making app is for you. It allows you to play drums on your phone using fingertips. It includes 10 drums, all on the same screen. Perhaps the coolest thing about this ap is that it lets you rearrange the position of the drums which influences the sound produced, through the 3D surround effect. It is available for $1.99.

So many apps focusing on enabling users to make their own music through their smartphones makes me wonder if everyone owning a smartphone will soon turn into a musician. It is truly a mobile revolution. As Ge Wang says, ?A mobile marching band isn?t far off.?

Wi-Fi Media lets your Nexus 7 play movies on any screen via HTC's Media Link HD (hands-on video)

WiFi Media lets your Nexus 7 play movies on any screen via HTC's Media Link HD handson video

We're rather big fans of the Nexus 7 here at Engadget HQ -- it's just hard not to like a $200 tablet with a Tegra 3 SoC and 7-inch glass-bonded IPS display running pure Jelly Bean. Of the few missing features, there's one we're bemoaning more than the lack of rear camera, and that's the absence of any kind of HDMI or MHL video output. So far, watching movies with the Nexus 7's been relegated to using a Nexus Q and streaming content from Google Play or YouTube.

Enter Wi-Fi Media, an app available for free on Google Play that lets most Android devices like the Nexus 7 play movies, music and stills on any screen via any Cavium PureVu-compatible streamer, such as HTC's $90 Media Link HD. We tested Wi-Fi Media with our Nexus 7 and Media Link HD and found it to work pretty much as advertised except for some caveats. First the app doesn't mirror your screen -- you're limited to playing content stored on the tablet or on the network via DLNA, which means no YouTube, Netflix or games. Second, the app doesn't handle some common file types -- like AVI, for example.

While it supports watching movies, listening to music and looking at pictures, keep in mind that Wi-Fi Media is not a particularly polished app. In addition to playing local and remote DLNA content, you're able to login to Facebook and Picasa and stream images directly from these accounts, but that's pretty much it in terms of functionality. There's also no way to configure the Media Link HD, so you'll need a sanctioned HTC handset to setup the multimedia streamer before using it with a Nexus 7. Want to know more? Peek at our screenshot gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.

A Mobile Phone Jammer is an electronic device that can temporarily disrupt any mobile phone signals that are in a close enough area to the jammer. Mobile phone jammer are often used by the military and law enforcement officials to either stop or control mobile phone communication during disputes or threatening situations. With mobile phone use spreading almost everywhere and more people growing tired of being subjected to other people?s personal conversations, some municipalities are considering whether to begin jamming mobile phone use in some areas.

?

How Mobile phone jammer Works

Cell phones communicate with a service network through cell towers. Cell towers are placed in specific places to provide service to small areas. As a mobile phone is moved between these areas, the towers pass off the signals.

A mobile phone jammer transmits on the same airwaves that cell phones do. When the jammer is activated, it is able to disrupt the signal between the mobile phone and the nearest tower. Because the mobile phone jammer and the mobile phone use the same frequency, they effectively stop the other signal. Often a mobile phone will boost its power at interferences like this so, to keep the signal disrupted, the jammer must be able to stay steady with the cell phone.

How Cell Phone JammerAre Made?

Mobile phone jammer are usually simple devices with typically only a switch to turn it on and off, a light to show that it is working and an external antenna to send the signal. If the jammer is more sophisticated, it might include controls to set the jamming for varied frequencies.

Small mobile phone jammer are usually powered by batteries. Often, the batteries are even the same as mobile phone batteries. Larger mobile phone jammer might be electrically powered.

Mobile phone jammer of Range

Mobile phone jammer typically have a range of between 50 and 80 feet. This means that they will only successfully jam cell phones that are within this range. As soon as the mobile phone travels out of range, the signal will return and you can again use the phone. More sophisticated mobile phone jammer might have larger ranges.

Cell Phone Jammer Size

Earlier mobile phone jammer were very large and not at all portable. New mobile phone jammer are small enough to carry in a pocket the same way people carry cell phones. You can easily hold a mobile phone jammer in your hand while using one.

Uses of mobile phone jammer

Some buildings, businesses, offices and churches are now beginning to utilize strong mobile phone jammer that are mounted on a wall or a ceiling. These mobile phone jammer are generally housed in small metal boxes and are quite inconspicuous. Mobile phone jammer like this can effectively make mobile phone use impossible in the building structure.

Legality of cell phone jammer

Whether it is legal to own and use a mobile phone jammer depends on your location and should be considered before attempting to purchase or use a mobile phone jammer. It is illegal to sell mobile phone jammers in the United States. In the U.K., selling mobile phone jammers is legal but civilians cannot legally use them.

Good Morning, Shooters?Now F#ck Off

Friday morning?s gunfire massacre at an Aurora, Colorado, midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises may feel like a peculiarly American tragedy, but the United States is far from being the only country in the world where some deluded, deranged and very, very self-important asshole kills masses of people who are simply going about minding their own pursuit of happiness.

Norway?s Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people on July 22, 2011, in coordinated bomb and gun attacks on government buildings and at a camp for teenagers outside Oslo. In March of this year, 23-year-old Mohammed Merah shot to death four people, including three children, outside the Ozar Hatorah Jewish day school in Toulouse, France. Christopher Husbands, 23, is charged with shooting two people to death and wounding six others on June 2, 2012, at the Eaton Centre Mall in Toronto, Canada. Attacks in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and Iraq are numerous, but seem less aberrant for having occurred in festering war zones.

So the USA is not alone in harboring individuals who take it upon themselves to murder groups of people who pose no bodily threat, but we are accustomed to doing things on a larger scale than the rest of the world.

MORE: Winning the Lobbying War

Friday?s Dark Knight Rises massacre is the sixth random mass shooting to occur in the United States in 2012. And we?re hardly halfway through the summer.

On February 27, a teenager shot into a Chardon, Ohio, high-school cafeteria and killed three people, injuring three others. On April 2, a gunner in Oakland, California, shooting into a classroom at Oikos University, killed seven people and wounded three others. On April 7, five Tulsa, Oklahoma, pedestrians were shot arbitrarily, three of them fatally. Two men have been charged with the shootings. On May 30, a Seattle, Washington, shooter fired into a caf? and carjacked a woman, killing five people and injuring one more. On July 17, a Tuscaloosa, Alabama, bar took fire from a single gunman; 17 people were wounded. And early this morning, July 20, failed 24-year-old PhD candidate James Holmes, masked and in costume, presumably killed at least 12 people, injuring 50 or more, at an Aurora, Colorado, screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

Americans are stocked with roughly 90 guns for every 100 people. Regions with higher rates of gun ownership suffer elevated homicide rates. On average, gun violence kills fractionally more than 84 people in the U.S. every day, and injures more than twice that number.

There is an apparent correlation to be drawn between the relative ease of access to firearms in the United States and the country?s rate of gun violence. This correlation appears to be lost upon the National Rifle Association?s social media manager. Just as America was waking up to news of the Aurora shooting tragedy, the American Rifleman, the official journal of the NRA, announced its disconnect with current American reality over Twitter. See below.

If not for the organization?s intense and sustained opposition to stricter gun control legislation, it might seem unfair to single out the NRA?s tone-deaf good morning to the Dark Knight catastrophe.

Celeb Boutique issued an equally crass or stupid response. The online purveyor of sleazy frocks squeezed out a tweet claiming that one of its Kim Kardashian-inspired garments was responsible for the trending hash tag #Aurora.

Major news media outlets also strayed from real and pertinent coverage, exemplified by George Stephanopoulos distilling America?s number-one post-killings priority on ABC News:

?The real concern now?? said Stephanopoulos. ?Potential copycats across the country.?

Rather than cock a brow incredulously and demand ?Where? Who? On what authority??, Pierre Thomas, ABC News?s Senior Justice Correspondent, expanded upon Stephanopoulos?s ?real concern?:

?Law enforcement officials will be having conversations with major city police chiefs around the country looking at the premier of this movie,? said Thomas. ?It?s expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, long lines out, ?the perfect soft target? as one official told me. You may see stepped up police presence outside of theaters around the country today, George.?

But the United States is a country of ?perfect soft targets,? and we want to remain that way. We want our summer block parties. We want our New Years Eve mobs in Times Square. We want our music festivals, our NASCAR circuits, our Malls of America and our Million Man Marches. Civilized society, in the U.S. and abroad, should be defined as any place where great masses of people feel perfectly secure bumbling about all the live long day as ?perfect soft targets.?

In the hours after the nation became consumed with this latest assault upon our senses of safety, hope and identity, President Obama promised ?my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people [emphasis added], and caring for those who have been wounded.?

Hundreds of law enforcement experts had descended upon the Aurora Mall within mere hours after the bloody horror at the Century 16 Theater.

A shooting that did not happen will always have a better outcome than a homicide investigation can hope to result in?no matter how expertly run.

It?s heartening to see city and federal protectors hop to the rescue in the aftermath of these inexplicable, unpredictable, impossible to repel attacks. No one is questioning that, after the shots were fired, cops in Seattle, Tulsa, Tuscaloosa, Oakland and Chardon moved adroitly and quickly to pick up the pieces.

But if the guns had not been in the shooters hands, these crimes may have been averted. A shooting that did not happen will always have a better outcome than a homicide investigation can hope to result in?no matter how expertly run.

It is true that Timothy McVeigh didn?t employ a single bullet in killing 168 people and injuring 680 more at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. Guns are not the only way to kill people; they are only among the most convenient.

According to three separate polls, conducted by Time, ABC/Wall Street Journal and NBC News/Washington Post in 2011, a majority of Americans favor stricter gun-control laws.

A field of options exists between tightening the flow of firearms to U.S. citizens and gutting the Second Amendment. Gun ownership is a guaranteed American right?granted. Also a given: Some system for reducing those 86 daily fatalities of U.S. gun violence is surely within reach of America?s collective reasoning and will.

If someone just had the guts not to block the conversation, it might lead to a solution 86 people a day could live with.

Now, while the bloody atrocity of Aurora is fresh, seems, once again, like the perfect time for that discussion to happen.

Can the United States preserve the Second Amendment and still reduce gun violence deaths? Say what you think in COMMENTS.

Moderate Drinking May Contribute To Bone Health - The ElderCare ...

A new study from Oregon State University found evidence that moderate drinking among women in their 50s and early 60s may help prevent bone loss. The research, published in the journal Menopause, looked at a small sampling of women who drank an average of 1.4 drinks a day and had no history of fractures related to osteoporosis. Participants gave blood samples at the beginning of the study, then were asked to abstain from drinking for two weeks, after which time their blood was taken again. The results showed that, during the two weeks of not drinking, the rate of bone removal and replacement increased. When the women began drinking again, the rate of bone turnover rapidly decreased. Urszula Iwaniec, PhD, associate professor at Oregon State University, said moderate drinking may reduce the overall rate of bone turnover, which may reduce bone loss and the risk of osteoporosis. Iwaniec cautions, however, that only moderate drinking was associated with the positive effects and excessive alcohol consumption can harm bone health. More here and here.

Walgreen, Express Scripts sign new agreement

(AP) ? The Walgreen pharmacy chain will begin filling prescriptions from customers in the Express Scripts network again starting in September under a new multiyear contract that ends a costly impasse between the companies.

The agreement announced Thursday follows a series of disputes between Walgreen and Express Scripts that ended with the discontinuation of the contract between the drugstore operator and the pharmacy benefit manager last year.

Since January, Walgreen has not filled prescriptions for Express Scripts, saying the company was not paying enough in drug dispensing fees. Its sales have slumped since the split.

Shares of Walgreen Co. jumped $3.55, or 11.5 percent, to $34.52 in morning trading Thursday while Express Scripts shares rose $1.09, or 1.9 percent, to $58.78.

Express Scripts Holding Co. said it ended the contract with Walgreen because the drugstore operator wanted a premium compared to what Express Scripts paid other pharmacies. Walgreen Co. had said it would rather give up the revenue than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.

The companies said in a statement Thursday that Walgreen will rejoin the network of pharmacies available to Express Scripts customers starting Sept. 15. Terms of the new contract were not disclosed.

"We are in the business of providing a broad range of pharmacy, health and wellness services to help meet the needs of all of our customers," said Greg Wasson, president and CEO of Walgreens, in a statement. "I am pleased that Walgreens and Express Scripts have been able to reach an agreement that works for both parties and is consistent with our company's principles.

Before the companies' contract lapsed, Express Scripts filed a lawsuit against Walgreen, accusing the drugstore chain of trying to lure away its customers. The lawsuit alleged that Walgreen told Express Scripts plan members, and especially Medicare Part D beneficiaries, that they would not be able to fill their prescriptions at Walgreen pharmacies unless they left Express Scripts and switched to a new pharmacy benefits management plan.

Express Scripts administers prescription drug benefits for health plan sponsors and members, and it pays drugstores like Walgreen to fill prescriptions.

Apple's iPod line: A $7.5 billion business that gets no respect - Apple ...

Q3 2012 data points are estimates. iPod touch ests. from Piper Jaffray

FORTUNE -- You might think that after tracking them for nearly a dozen years, the analysts who follow Apple (AAPL)?would have a better handle on the company's?quarterly iPod sales.?But Apple analysts tend to focus on the product lines that are still growing like gangbusters -- chiefly the iPad and the iPhone -- and they offer iPod estimates almost as an afterthought.

That may explain the wide discrepancy in iPod unit sales numbers submitted by our panel of 62 analysts -- 28 from Wall Street and 34 independents. The estimates ranged from a low of 5 million from Janney Capital Market's Bill Choi, to a high of 7.5 million from Bullish Cross' Andy Zaky.

There was no particular pattern to distinguish the pros from the independents. Both groups -- as you can see from the table below the fold -- were all over the lot.

There was, however, something of a consensus. The average estimate among the professionals was 6.38 million units, and the average among the indies was nearly the same: 6.36 million.

Because Apple doesn't break out sales numbers for the original iPods versus the iPod touch (except to say that the touch these days represents more than half of iPod sales), we've relied in the chart above on Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, who estimates the split to be approaching 64/36 in favor of the iPod touch.

Below the fold:?The analysts' individual estimates, with the pros in blue and the amateurs in green.?We'll find out who was closest to the mark when Apple reports its earnings a week from today (Tuesday, July 24).
