Missing Georgia Boys Found Safe in Texas, Dad in Custody

Missing Georgia Boys Found Safe in Texas, Dad in Custody

12/30/2012

Courtesy of Theresa Nash(AUSTIN, Texas) -- Two missing Georgia boys have been found safe in Texas and their father has been taken into police custody.

Moments after pleading for her boys' return on television, the boys' mother Theresa Nash received a phone call from a citizen in Texas who said he was with her sons.

"I was in complete disbelief," Nash told ABC Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV as she was boarding a plane to pick up her sons. "He immediately put the phone to Ben and Henry and I talked to them. They were very, very shaken up."

Police in Austin, Texas, were notified when someone recognized the boys and their father at a motel after seeing them on TV.

"They were playing with a Nerf ball, went back inside, they were with Daddy and they came back out and somebody said, 'Put your hands up,' and everybody put their hands up," Nash said.

The boys' father Daniel Cleary was arrested without incident, police said.

"We don't know why he chose Austin," Austin Police Cpl. Wuthipong Tantaksinanuki told WSB-TV. "I know that after he was taken into custody, we did recover a handgun -- a pistol -- and a large sum of money."

Daniel Cleary, who will be extradited to Georgia, faces a charge of interstate interference with custody, a felony, and could face other charges, McGee said.

Benjamin and Henry Cleary had been missing since Wednesday from the greater Atlanta area.

Benjamin, 9, and Henry, 7, had plans to leave with their father, Daniel Cleary, on an overnight trip to Chattanooga, Tenn., on Dec. 22. When they failed to return as scheduled on Dec. 26, their mother, Theresa Nash, who does not live with the boys' father, went to his house to check on them, only to find the phone disconnected and the house empty.

An Amber Alert was issued for the boys.

"There is a court order for them to contact me every day," Nash told ABCNews.com on Friday. "When I hadn't heard from them, and their father's phone was turned off, I went to their father's house to see if they were there. The house was cleared out as if they had moved."

Nash called Cleary "unstable," and said he had only been using cash since the boys went missing. Police said they had not found any charges on his credit card.

The three were spotted Friday at a Walmart in Jackson, Tenn., McGee said.

The boys were found on Henry's eighth birthday and were expected to be reunited with their mother on Sunday.

"They've been begging for an Xbox 360 for Christmas, and Santa brought them one so they need to come home because it's waiting," Nash said on Friday.

A prayer vigil that was scheduled for today at 2 p.m. in Georgia's Suwanee Town Center Park will be still be held for prayers of thanks.

Andrius Kubilius | delfi.ltAndrius Kubilius and his wife Rasa left their appartment in Turni?k?s and moved to a newly build house in the Gvazdikai garden community, near Kair?nai. Here the family of the Seimas oppostion leader is happy and surrounded by nature, writes delfi.lt referring to ?Lithuanian News?.

In the last four years A. Kubilius lived with his wife in their apartment in Turni?k?s, rented by the Prime Minister?s service, and now they have moved to an even more beautiful place. The house stands in the small street surrounded by the forest, in the ?Rasa? garden plot community belonging to the eldest son of A. Kubilius.

?This house is the creation of our whole family. The ownership belongs to our son Vytautas and it is built with a loan from the bank in his name. Their son works in an international company and spends most of his time abroad. The company?s regional office is in Warsaw? ? said the former Premier A. Kubilius to Lithuanian News.

The house was built in a garden plot that A. Kubilius? father inherited. As A.? Kubilius stated in the declaration of public and private interests, he vouched for son?s loan which is between 300 thousand to 400 thousand litas. A. Kubilius? youngest son and family live in his former apartment on Mildos street.

Type 'Sell' into Google Finance, Get Apple's Stock Price

It turns out that when you search for the word ?sell? on Google Finance, the site redirects you to the financial page for Apple Inc. The result is no different than when you search for Apple or aapl.

Given the vicious rivalry between Apple and Google, this odd result is pretty hilarious. It could be related to user queries (though we don?t know exactly how) or it could be an easter egg put in on purpose by a Google employee. Either way, there doesn?t appear to be any malicious agenda behind the move: if you click on the blue ?More results? button, there?s a long list of other companies that have ?sell? or ?sells? in their company description.

goog finance sell 730x272 Type sell into Google Finance and youll get Apples stock price (Update: Google say its not deliberate)

The oddity appears to have been first discovered by Greey Picks but was brought to our attention by Joe of m8 Capital on Twitter:

Again, it?s unclear why this happens, and searching around for similar results has not led to anything quite as odd. The query for ?buy,? for example, leads to Best Buy, which makes sense given that the word is half the name of the company. We can?t say the same thing about ?sell? and Apple Inc.

Other queries like ?trade? and ?stock? lead to landing pages that let you pick from a list of related companies and mutual funds. Unless there?s a company with the word ?sell? in its name, we think the same should happen for this query as well.

We?re still looking at other queries, but so far it seems like ?sell? is the only one that points to where it clearly shouldn?t. The Google Finance support page doesn?t seem particularly helpful in describing how this could be happening. Whatever glitch is causing this, the fact that Google apparently wants its users to sell Apple?s stock is quite amusing.

Update at 5:00PM EST: As pointed out in the comments, typing in ?over sold? takes you to Amazon?s stock price.

We have contacted Google about this query result. We will update this article if we hear back.

Update at 8:30PM EST: ?This isn?t deliberate ? our algorithms seem to be keying off of the words ?sell? and ?sells? in the description of this very popular stock symbol,? a Google spokesperson told TNW. ?We?re working on how to adjust things so it doesn?t happen anymore.?

RG3 leads Redskins into playoffs

Running back gains 200 yards and scores 3 TDs to beat Dallas for NFC East title

updated 11:28 p.m. ET Dec. 30, 2012

LANDOVER, Md. - "R-G-3!" was all Redskins fans needed to chant when they wanted to express their love for Robert Griffin III. For the lesser-known rookie, they opted for his whole name: "Alf-red Mor-ris!"
It's a new generation that has Washington atop the NFC East for the first time this millennium. There's Griffin - the vocal leader, the first-round draft pick, the Heisman Trophy winner, the team captain. And there's Morris - the out-of-nowhere sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic who merely ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the division-clincher and broke the franchise single-season rushing record.

"These," cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "aren't ordinary rookies."

The Redskins claimed their first division title since 1999, beating the archrival Dallas Cowboys 28-18 Sunday night in a winner-take-all finale to end the NFL's regular season.

"I was 9 years old in 1999," said Griffin, sporting a black baseball cap commemorating the title. "So I stand before you at 22, and the Redskins are the NFC East champions. To me, talking to Alfred after the game, it's the first time the Redskins have been champs since `99 and we came in and we did it in one year. The sky's the limit for this team."

Griffin, gradually regaining his explosiveness after spraining his right knee four weeks ago, ran for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Redskins (10-6), who finished with seven straight wins after their bye week. They became the first NFL team to rally from 3-6 and make the playoffs since the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996.

With the running game working so well, Griffin didn't have to throw much. He completed nine of 18 passes for 100 yards.

Washington will host Seattle next Sunday, the Redskins' third consecutive playoff game against the Seahawks. They lost at Seattle as a wild-card team in the 2005 and 2007 seasons.

"I've been here for the 4-12, the bad times, almost being the joke of the NFL," veteran defensive lineman Kedric Golston said. "But to do this with this group of guys - the old and the new - it's good to be here."

Certainly, Sunday night was mostly about the new. Morris had touchdown runs of 1, 17 and 32 yards and was so dominant that the Cowboys - missing their five best run defenders due to injuries - fell hook, line and sinker nearly every time the Redskins faked the ball to him. He finished with 1,613 yards for the year, topping Clinton Portis' 1,516 in 2005.

"I'll tell you what: Alfred Morris became a star tonight," Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said. "He deserved it. He's a phenomenal football player."

To which Morris answered: "I'm never a star. I'll never be a star. Other people might think I'm a star, but I'm just Alfred."

He won't have much choice if he keeps this up. On the Redskins' go-ahead drive in the third quarter, six plays were runs by Morris and the other three involved fakes to him. The touchdown came when Griffin faked to Morris - one of several times linebacker DeMarcus Ware was totally fooled by deception in the backfield - and ran 10 yards around left end to put Washington ahead 14-7.

The Cowboys (8-8), meanwhile, will miss the playoffs for the third straight season, having stumbled in a make-or-break end-of-regular-season game for the third time in five years.

Tony Romo threw three interceptions - matching his total from the last eight games combined. A poor throw was picked by Rob Jackson when the Cowboys had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes.

"I feel as though I let our team down," Romo said.

Romo completed 20 of 31 passes for 218 yards, and his career is now further tainted by post-Christmas disappointments, including Week 17 losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (44-6) in 2008 and the New York Giants (31-14) last year. He's also 1-3 in playoff games.

"Your legacy will be written when you're done playing the game," Romo said. "And when it's over with, you'll look back. ... It's disappointing not being able to get over that hump."

The Cowboys played catch-up after Morris' 32-yard scamper gave the Redskins a 21-10 cushion with 10:32 to play, pulling within three on a 10-yard pass to Kevin Ogletree and a 2-point conversion with 5:50 left. But Morris' third touchdown sealed the win with 1:09 remaining.
The Cowboys also dealt with in-game injuries to receivers Miles Austin (left ankle), Dez Bryant (back) and Dwayne Harris (lower leg). Bryant, who had a torrid second half of the season despite breaking his left index finger, had four catches for 71 yards.

Washington's slow start this season prompted coach Mike Shanahan to dismiss playoff hopes and declare the remaining seven games would determine which players would be on his team "for years to come."

Griffin and his teammates had other plans, and the coach quickly changed his tune. Now the Redskins will be playing in January.

"All odds were against us," Morris said. "But we believed in each other."

Notes: Griffin set two more NFL rookie records. His 102.4 passer rating topped Ben Roethlisberger's 98.1 in 2004, and his 1.3 percentage of passes intercepted is better than Charlie Batch's 1.98 in 1998. Griffin had already set the league mark for rushing yards by a rookie QB (815). ... The Redskins also set a franchise record for fewest turnovers in a season with 14, fewer even than the 1982 team that played only nine regular-season games because of a players strike.

Holiday Gift Giving ? Dr. Mahaney's Top Five Pet Products for 2012 ...

This article originally appeared on Dr. Mahaney?s?The Daily Vet?column on petMD.

I have some product suggestions for you to consider while shopping for gifts for your pets this season, which I have chosen based on their ability to enhance pet well-being or safety. In 2011 I took a more species specific approach in writing?Dr. Patrick?s Top Five Canine Holiday Gifts. This year, I am considering both the needs of our companion canine?and?felines.

Tr?ff?

Troff hydration for dogs, Troff hydration for cats, travel water for pet

The?Tr?ff?hydration pouch promotes pet-safe hydration in a manner that reduces the likelihood that your pet will consume sources of hydration that are potentially contaminated with pathogens or illness causing agents ? such as random bowls, public water sources, or puddles. Tr?ff has a gentle stream flowing out of a unique, twist off, one-way valve (patent pending).
Tr?ff shares some key facts on pet hydration:

?Every dog requires one to three ounces of water per pound of body weight each day. Water makes up 70%of an adult dog and approximately 84% of a newborn puppy?s body. A dog can lose all of its fat and half of its protein and live. A simple 10% loss of body water will cause a serious state of dehydration.?

Consistent hydration can improve our pets? health regardless of the harshness of their climate, degree of activity, or stage of illness or wellness.

The Tr?ff is especially beneficial for pet owners who travel. Whether you are hiking with Fido or flying with Fluffy, Tr?ff helps to ensure that hydration is maintained during times of stress, activity, or illness.

When empty, Tr?ff rolls up or folds for easy storage. The Tr?ff pouch is also eco-friendly, as each 17oz pouch is made from BPA free, FDA approved materials, and is reusable.

Doodie (Duty) Pack

doodie pack, dog back pack, hike with dog

As an advocate of veterinary and human public health, I?m especially focused on responsible pet ownership as it pertains to proper waste disposal. Cardiff and I are frequent hikers in Los Angeles?s many canyons and I am frustrated by owners either not picking up their dog?s poop, or doing so, yet leaving behind the bag with the intent to pick it up on their return journey (yeah right!).

Fortunately,?Doodie Pack?exists to help relieve your need to carry your dog?s poop bag in your hand or pocket during a walk or hike. Additionally, Doodie Pack allows your dog to transport some supplies (extra poop bags, medications, snacks, etc.) which is useful during outdoor excursions. It could even hold your keys or cell phone.

Doodie Pack also provides coverage of the top and sides of your pet?s thorax (chest), which can lend a calming effect in stressful situations, or even help reduce anxious tendencies.

?Walk In Sync

dog leash, training leash, walk in sync

Who loves when an out of control dog pulls you in all directions during a walk? Not me! Fortunately, I started Cardiff?s training at an early age and taught him how to heel. Yet, as I am no longer Cardiff?s only regular caretaker, rules are not always so well enforced during Cardiff?s urban trek outings.
So, I was enthused to learn of and demo the?Walk In Sync?humane dog walking and training system, and to meet its creator, Alecia Evans, at?BlogPaws 2012. The novel design comfortably straps around and under a dog?s chest and neck while protecting the neck?s delicate structures (trachea, esophagus, nerves, etc.). Additionally, the location of the clip to which the leash attaches is located in front of the dog?s sternum (breast bone) and causes the body to turn to the side should your pooch pull ahead.

My clients who use the Walk In Sync harness have given positive reports as to the new-found joy in walking a calm canine.

PetSafe Lickety Stick

dog treat, cat treat, lickety stik

With nearly 54 percent of dogs and cats in the United States being overweight or obese according to the?Association For Pet Obesity Prevention?(APOP), it?s vital that owners consider the adverse health effects that excess calorie consumption has for our companion canine and felines.

Often, when offering treats, pet owners don?t recognize how easy it is to exceed a pet?s caloric needs when not closely paying attention to recommended portion size. This is where the PetSafe?Lickety Stick?comes in as a healthy alternative, as it provides only 1 calorie in 10 or 20 feline licks.

It is a U.S.A. manufactured treat that contains all-natural ingredients and comes in a variety of tasty flavors for both cats and dogs. The Lickety Stick is portable and can easily travel with canine or feline owners seeking to capture their pet?s attention in a stimulating environment.

The Lickety Stick has been helpful in my practice to distract a patient that is not readily settling down for a physical exam, acupuncture treatment, or injection.

?PetHub

dog tag, pet id, pethub pet tags

As you all know, I am a big advocate of pet safety and strive to spread this message through my writing and other media projects. Yet, sometimes even I slip up. See?Chocolate Toxicity Hits Home.

Properly identifying your pet with a collar, tag, and microchip is a basic tenet of responsible pet ownership. Being easily able to discern information about whom to contact should a pet get lost should always be prominently displayed on our pets, both inside and outside the confines of our homes.

This is where?PetHub?comes in, as each custom tag features a QR code that, when scanned, starts a series of events that increases the likelihood your pet will safely be returned. ?When the tag is scanned with a smart-phone, the Good Samaritan sees all the information you have made public on your pet?s profile,? and progresses to more direct contact pending your level of PetHub subscription.

In using PetHub to identify a pet, your privacy is maintained, while vital contact information that is key to promoting your pet?s safe return is revealed.

That?s all for my perspective on 2012?s top holiday pets gifts. Have a safe and fun winter holiday season.

How The Africa Cup of Nations affects the Premier League and Football League - Group B review

Congo DR, Ghana, Mali and Niger are in Group B of the African Cup of Nations and their involvement has either directly or indirectly affected teams such as Bristol City, Arsenal, Leicester City, Birmingham City, West Ham, Fulham, Wolves, Crewe Alexandra, Brighton & HA, Peterbrough, Doncaster Rovers, Burton Albion and Watford.

Next year the African Nations Cup is once again in full flow as Zambia look to defend their title in South Africa. As always the competition will have an effect on global football as many stars players from the bigger leagues consider joining up with their countries in a bid to become kings of their home continent.

The Confederation of African Football has set the deadline for the submission of squads for January 9th; with the full list of 23-players being named by midnight. Any late submissions will see a substantial fine and the loss of a player from the list.

Some teams have announced their preliminary squads or training camp teams early but this of course doesn?t cater for the English League system whose continued lack of a winter break means most of the English based players will not be available until shortly before the competition starts on the 19th January.

But which Premier League and football league teams are going to win and lose from the Africa Cup of Nations?

Here is a country-by-country guide for Group B.

Ghana

The most likely loss will be Bristol City winger Albert Adomah who has been included in the original preliminary squad ahead of the January 9th deadline. There is however a large pool of Ghanaian nationals playing in the UK and the some have recently been called up to action so could feature despite not being named in the preliminary squad if others succumb to injury. Arsenal youngsters Daniel Boateng and Emmanuel Frimpong were recent call-ups and Championship duo Jeff Schlupp and Akwasi Asante of Leicester City and Birmingham City respectively could also be unavailable for up to a month.

Mali

The Eagles were the national side who first ignited the debate on releasing players for the African Nations when they called up the previously uncapped Fredi Kanoute in 2004. This time around they will cause less of a fuss as West Ham United would have to have been well aware of Modibo Maiga?s intentions to travel with his country. QPR again could be hit if Samba Diakite decides to travel while Fulham midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who has struggled with injury this season, is another maybe. Wolves are the only other team likely to lose a man in the form of Tongo Doumbia.

Niger

Another shock qualifier as they disposed of Guinea in the qualifying stages. None of the squad have links to the UK but their defeat of Guinea has prevented the National Elephants from tempting Mathias Pogba, brother of ex Manchester United prospect Paul Pogba into representation after a good season so far with Crewe Alexandra.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Their captain Lomana Lua-Lua is no longer with Blackpool but his brother Kazenga, as yet uncapped, could be called upon at the expense of Brighton and Hove Albion. There are plenty of other players from the football league who are likely to be called upon by manager Claude Le Roy including Gabriel Zakuani of Peterbrough and Herita Ilunga of Doncaster Rovers. Burton Albion midfielder Jacques Maghoma is also a likely addition while Britt Assombalonga of Watford cannot be discounted. Reported Arsenal target Dieumerci Mbokani of Anderlecht will also be on his way.

Who do you think loses out most from the 2013 African Cup of Nations?

How To Overshare: 7 Things We Forget We Do Daily On Social Media

Let's own up to it: Social media is an addictive part of our everyday lives. In fact, habits like flipping through Facebook or Instagram have become almost second nature -- 40 percent of Americans even admit to checking their smartphones while on the toilet. The problem with living simultaneously in both the digital world and reality? Sometimes we end up sharing way more than we realize.

Automatic sharing features on some social networking sites (ahem, Facebook) let you publicize your activities without having to hit a "share" button. It can be pretty convenient, until the day comes when you forget you've elected to use these particular features.

We've gathered together a list of pointers in the slideshow below, highlighting the information you may inadvertently give away on the Internet every day. Whether it's unknowingly tagging yourself in specific locations, or embarrassingly stalking your crush on LinkedIn.

Have you ever accidentally shared information on the web? Sound off in the comments section below, or Tweet us @HuffPostTech. Then, read more about the 9 ways you can get kicked off Facebook, or flip through 15 annoying tweets we never want to see again.

Without further ado, here are the 7 things we forget we're doing online each day:

  • Instagram Lets The Cat Out Of The Bag

FourSquare was designed to show the world your location -- but sometimes <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/instagram">photo-sharing app Instagram</a> inadvertently gives us away. In fact, we're so accustomed to snapping "artsy" pics of puppies and salads that it's possible we're unintentionally sharing our whereabouts, particularly if the photos aren't categorized as "private." So if you call out of work sick, make sure you don't accidentally post a picture of yourself relaxing at the local beach. Or, to minimize unwanted attention, go to your Instagram "Options" page and select the "Photos Are Private" button.

  • If You See Something, Type Something?

For many years, we were able to read Facebook messages at our leisure -- and then promptly ignore them. Now, <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/News/434/A-New-Look-for-Facebook-Messages">after a Facebook update this summer</a>, users can see when someone has read a chat or message they've sent. So if you want to avoid the awkward realization you've ignored someone, type a message back, don't open the message to begin with, or use this <a href="http://crossrider.com/install/14917-chat-undetected">Chat Undected extension</a> to regain your excuse for not responding.

  • Whoops, We Stalked You (And You Know It)

<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/okcupid">OkCupid</a> and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/linkedin">LinkedIn</a> are used for notably different purposes, but these social networking sites share a (potentially embarrassing) feature. Both platforms show who has viewed your profile and when you're checking out someone else's, making "cyber stalking" a not-so-anonymous act. In order to privately dig into another person's information, both websites offer memberships, which will cost you a few extra bucks a month. But then, of course, you'll be able to check out as many profiles as you want, without ever being detected. Creepy? No, we find it more... <em>practical.</em>

  • Facebook Bares It All

Everyday we might read a few news articles online, "Like" a slew of photos on Instagram or listen to a couple tunes via Spotify. All of the above activities now have "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/20/facebook-frictionless-apps_n_1213970.html">frictionless Facebook apps,</a>" or apps that automatically post activities to your Facebook profile without the use of a manual "share" button. Every app has different preferences, so be sure to read the details of what you're allowing Facebook to publish. The top 10 Ohio State sports stories of 2012: Part II

This is second in two-part series by?Lantern sports editor Pat Brennan, who lists the top 10 Ohio State sports stories from 2012. Part I listed stories 10-6, which were:

10. A night to remember for Samantha Prahalis?:?Prahalis, the lone senior on the 2011-12 OSU women's basketball team, set the program's single-game scoring record with 42 points against Minnesota on Feb. 23.

9. Football recruit walks after athletic department warns of Kentucky sex offender?:?Former OSU football recruit Alex Anzalone de-committed from the Buckeyes after learning he had come into contact with a convicted sex offender during a visit to Columbus. The athletic department then cautioned all OSU student-athletes about Charles Waugh, the sex offender from Kentucky.?

8. Abandon ship: Men?s basketball?s Carrier Classic game sunk by moist court?:?OSU men's basketball's season-opening game against Marquette, scheduled to be played on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, was delayed and eventually canceled due to condensation on the outdoor playing surface.

7. Eleven Buckeyes Compete at London Olympics

6. Braxton Miller finishes 5th in Heisman Trophy voting

The top five Ohio State sports stories from 2012 are, like the previous five, telling of the athletic department's diversity. The top five tells of two athletes ? women's soccer's Tiffany Cameron and wrestling's Logan Stieber?? that set records and won championships. The top five stories also includes the successes of the two programs that drive the OSU athletics machine: Football and men's basketball. With regard to these subjects, diversity manifests itself in the fact that many OSU teams achieved on-field success in 2012.?

By the nature of the size of the OSU athletic department, it also faces widespread and diverse problems, such as the multitude of NCAA violations that were revealed in 2012. This, too, is reflected in the five listing of the most important stories produced by the OSU sports beat in 2012, and is no less important or relevant than the achievements of the athletes.?

5. Tiffany Cameron's record-breaking season

Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium won?t soon forget Tiffany Cameron?s 2012 senior season.?In her final campaign with the Scarlet and Gray, Cameron used 21 goals to shatter the previous single-season scoring record (13) and raise her career tally to 40 goals, also a program record. The Canadian international was the catalyst for OSU?s Big Ten Tournament Championship, which secured the program?s fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Cameron scored both goals in the Big Ten title game on Nov. 4 to lift OSU to a 2-1 win against Illinois. Cameron?s 69th-minute goal was one of nine game-winning strikes she recorded in 2012. She had a Big Ten-record 19 career game-winners for the Buckeyes.

4. Buckeyes bounce to Big Easy for Final Four

Between Feb. 11 and Feb. 26, the OSU men?s basketball team lost three out of five conference games. Scary stuff considering the postseason was approaching quickly, but OSU coach Thad Matta delivered what might have been his best coaching job for the program and eventually rallied his troops to a share of the regular season Big Ten title, a 31-8 overall record and a trip to the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans.

OSU?s offense, led by former forward and 2012 NBA draftee Jared Sullinger, caught fire in the NCAA Tournament as the Buckeyes danced past Loyola (Md.), Gonzaga, Cincinnati and No. 1-seeded Syracuse by a combined 48 points to capture the tournament?s East Region Championship. At the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, the wheels came off in the second half of the national semifinal game. OSU relinquished a lead, lost to Kansas, 64-62, and finally saw the curtain fall on its dream season. It was a thrilling run through the NCAA Tournament that featured one of the more talented teams Matta has assembled during his tenure in Columbus.

3. Secondary NCAA violations surface in 2012

Just more than a year after OSU football was shaken to its core by the "Tattoo-Gate" scandal that resulted in the Buckeyes being banned from postseason play in 2012, the athletic department released information about 73 secondary NCAA violations throughout 2012.

Not all the violations took place in the current calendar year ? in May, the athletic department revealed 46 secondary violations spanning across 21 of OSU?s 36 varsity programs dating back to May 30, 2011.

Less than a week later, The Lantern learned of a second round of violations during an interview with OSU athletic director Gene Smith. Smith told The Lantern of 12 additional secondary violations, which, according to a Nov. 16 Cleveland Plain Dealer report, were included with 27 violations committed between ?mid-April and mid-September.??

The 73 violations almost certainly won?t result in severe NCAA punishment, but don?t forget that the word ?violations? has become an anxiety-provoking term for some in Buckeye Nation as a result of ?Tattoo-Gate."

The Ugly Duckling House | DIY Home Improvement Blog: Many ...

A little before and after this week seems like just the thing I need to feel like I'm back at my usual DIY programming (and the last project I'm likely to finish before #DIYcember ends).

I thought about painting the door ages ago and couldn't make up my mind. ?I was loving all of the inspired images I found on Pinterest for black interior doors... but there just never seemed to be the right time to make this little project happen. ?Then, just as tidy little projects tend to do... I got a wild hair and thought, why the hell not today?
And so it began, night after night, coat after coat. ?Thin coats sure take a while, but they're the best way to reach desired results.
Finally, after a fourth (!) coat on the door, I have updated something in the house just over a 2-year window of first imagining it. ?Huh. ?Imagine that.

After screwing the door hardware back on, I decided I liked?loved the brass on the glossy black door. ?The hinges are painted over from when they were painted ivory (somewhere around the dawn of time, give or take a decade), so that will have to be a problem to solve on another day.

Painting a paneled door is pretty simple. ?To make it look as professional as possible, you should paint the door in the following stages:

Start with the inside panels, painting the boxes first and then the center panels. ?From there, paint the middle section of the door, first starting with the vertical, then the horizontal sections. ?Finally, paint the outer part of the door. ?Your brush strokes should be in the same directions as in the image above. ?For my project, I used a small foam roller (for doors and furniture) and an angled paint brush.
The paint itself was Rustoleum's Painter's Touch in gloss black and stuck exceptionally well (I did a scratch test after the first coat, but since latex will peel off of oil-based paints, make sure you know what you're painting. ?A cotton ball soaked in denatured alcohol will help you prevent a lot of frustration?like Allison from House of Hepworths unfortunately experienced). ?I only needed a half pint (I love how tiny these cans are) but used all of it, and looked more like navy blue as it was being applied. ?I would have been okay with a slightly bluish hue, but after only a few minutes, the paint dried to a perfect black. ?Easy to paint, easy to clean up, and a dramatic upgrade to boring off-white! ?Next up: the staircase.

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories (update: fake!)

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, still won't be stealthy

Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of 2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result.

Update: Alas, this is indeed a fake. The source has updated to confirm that this was just a quick darkening job with an image editor -- you can tell by the darkened LED flash, camera and logo. But still, we wouldn't be surprised if Samsung does release its phablet in other colors to keep milking it.

Stomach bug knocks Nadal from Australian Open

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Just when Rafael Nadal had recovered from a knee injury, a stomach virus has delayed his return to tennis by a couple of months.

Nadal announced Friday he will miss next month's Australian Open and probably won't play again until the end of February. The Spaniard said he needs time to recover from the virus that already prevented him from coming back this week at Abu Dhabi.

Nadal has been sidelined since June with a knee injury, which forced him to miss the London Olympics and U.S. Open. He had planned to rejoin the ATP tour at the Qatar Open in Doha next month before the Jan. 14-27 Australian Open, but pulled out of both.

"We just hope he gets better quickly and we see him back on the tour as soon as possible," Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said. "Tennis fans across the world have been missing him."

While he is expected to recover from the virus in time for the year's first Grand Slam tournament, Nadal and his team said he wouldn't have the proper preparation for a five-set event.

Nadal stressed that his decision had nothing to do with the tendinitis in his left knee. That injury prompted him to take a break following a second-round loss to then 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June.

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well as predicted by the doctors," Nadal said in a statement from his hometown of Manacor on the island of Mallorca. "But this virus didn't allow me to practice this past week and therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open."

The former No. 1 hopes to return at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, starting Feb. 27. He left open the possibility of playing at an earlier tournament if his recovery went well.

"As my team and doctors say, the safest thing to do is to do things well and this virus has delayed my plans of playing these weeks," Nadal said. "I always said that my return to competition will be when I am in the right conditions to play and after all this time away from the courts I'd rather not accelerate the comeback and prefer to do things well."

Nadal's doctor, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, said in the same statement that the player needed at least a week to recover from the virus. That ruled him out for the Qatar Open, which starts Jan. 2.

Nadal's coach and uncle, Toni Nadal, said going straight to a five-set tournament after being sidelined so long was "not appropriate."

"It is simply not conceivable that his first event is a best-of-five sets event," he said in a statement. "He wouldn't be ready for that."

Nadal's knee injury prevented the 11-time Grand Slam winner from defending his Olympic singles gold medal at last summer's games, where he was supposed to be Spain's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony. He also had to pull out of the U.S. Open and Spain's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic, which his teammates lost without him.

Nadal, ranked No. 4, won the Australian Open in 2009. Last year, he lost to top-ranked Novak Djokovic in a title match that lasted 5 hours, 53 minutes, the longest recorded Grand Slam final.

Better Way Health Says: &#39;It&#39;s Not Just About Food!&#39; | StAug News

Better Way Health Says: ?It?s Not Just About Food!?

How to Have an Even Happier, Healthier 2013!

?

We talk about food. We talk about less sugar, cutting the fat, improving cardio, taking that beta glucan and eating beta glucan-filled foods so that you live longer, healthier lives. But, what most people do not know, is that life and health is not all about food and exercise. And our friends at BetterWayHealth.com want to talk to you this holiday season about the benefits of ?drink,? so that when you reach for that glass on New Year?s Eve you will have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.

?

What most people do not know in this age of constant exercise and constantly ?bashing? people about their weight ? and what and when 3D-BetterWay2they eat ? is that liquor is also something that allows people to live longer. When it comes to two categories ? abstainers and heavy drinkers ? we are talking about people who are leading their bodies toward heart attacks and strokes. BUT, a moderate drinker of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer and distilled spirits) is far less likely to suffer heart attacks, diabetes, arthritis, enlarged prostate, dementia, and several major cancers. This is not a new concept, by the way. This is something that even doctors will tell you, considering that alcoholic beverages help with tension, stress and even the easing of nerve endings and muscle pain. As long as you don?t overdo it ? this is a true health ?pleaser.?

?

Believe it or not, the medicinal properties of alcohol are mentioned everywhere throughout history; many books from various communities (including the ?Good Book?) talk about alcohol and how it cures. As early as the turn of the century there was evidence that moderate, controlled consumption decreased the risk of heart attack, not to mention huge evidence of other health benefits when it came to adding ?a drink? to daily life.

?

Reviews, studies, reports ? a great many things show a strong relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and the reduction in cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease. Even the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has reported that moderate drinkers have the greatest longevity. But they?re not the only ones who report this. Health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have existed since one of the earliest? scientific studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which appeared in 1904. And the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Committee on Cardiovascular Disease also weighed in by saying that ?the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and reduced death from heart disease can no longer be doubted.?

?

So?when the New Year comes along and the wine is flowing and the friends are smiling, what exactly is the best drink to add to the diet that will improve cardiovascular function and, perhaps, save you from heart disease?

?

There are no ?set? rules when it comes to the various alcohol categories, but the total calorie count has to be taken into consideration. Say you add one drink per day to your diet ? perhaps in the evening after the hard, fast job has come to an end and it is time to relax and do something for yourself! Generally speaking, a serving of wine has fewer calories than a serving of beer, which in turn has fewer calories than a serving of mixed drinks. Beer, as everyone knows, contains a great deal of carbs ? while most wines and liquors are low-carb categories. If you want to make the choice as simple as possible, go with a nice glass of wine or liquor. When we speak about liquor, however, we are NOT speaking about mixed drinks. In fact, doctor?s point out that when it comes to mixed drinks: ?It is the mixers, syrups, and sodas that get people into calorie trouble, because most drinks start with 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits that only have around 96 calories, but mixologists turn that into a beverage with hundreds of calories when special things are added.?

?

If calories are a concern, pick a drink that is served ?neat? and skip the extras completely. (A 1.5-ounce serving of vodka, gin, whiskey, etc., is roughly one hundred calories, which is online with a five-ounce serving of wine. Beer, of course, can cost you a little. Light beer can range from 90-100 calories per 12-ounce serving, whereas a regular beer is around 300 calories, which is a great deal to take in (even though this is still the number one choice for consumers.)

?

In essence, a glass of wine can provide you with all the health benefits you?re looking for, and when drinking liquor, just make sure it?s all by itself to give you better health. But if mixed drinks are your ?choice,? just make sure that you use mixers that are diet tonics, sodas and/or juices to keep them healthy. There?s always compromise when it comes to healthy/dietary foods, so drink is no different.

?

If you find yourself at that holiday party, just remember to have your drink then, perhaps, switch to a different, non-alcoholic drink, such as sparkling water with a squeeze of lime. This way, you can feel refreshed and not have to worry about any ?battle of the bulge? from over-consumption. If self-control is an issue (as it is most times with delicious foods), simply go for the lower-calorie and often more bland? drinks. That way, cutting yourself off will be absolutely no problem whatsoever.

?

In the end, enjoy and celebrate the New Year ? AND also work at least one glass of wine (if possible) into the diet so that you can save your heart the stress and tension it receives from the everyday hectic life. But, above all, turn to BetterWayHealth.com in the New Year and get the advice, friendship and help YOU need to live a healthier life!

?

Happy Holidays!

(AP) ? North Korea has repaired flood damage at its nuclear test facility and could conduct a quick atomic explosion if it chose, though water streaming out of a test tunnel may cause problems, analysis of recent satellite photos indicates.

Washington and others are bracing for the possibility that if punished for a successful long-range rocket launch on Dec. 12 that the U.N. considers a cover for a banned ballistic missile test, North Korea's next step might be its third nuclear test.

Rocket and nuclear tests unnerve Washington and its allies because each new success puts North Korean scientists another step closer to perfecting a nuclear warhead small enough to put on a missile that could hit the mainland United States.

Another nuclear test, which North Korea's Foreign Ministry hinted at on the day of the rocket launch, would fit a pattern. Pyongyang conducted its first and second atomic explosions, in 2006 and 2009, weeks after receiving U.N. Security Council condemnation and sanctions for similar long-range rocket launches.

North Korea is thought to have enough plutonium for a handful of crude atomic bombs, and unveiled a uranium enrichment facility in 2010, but it must continue to conduct tests to master the miniaturization technology crucial for a true nuclear weapons program.

"With an additional nuclear test, North Korea could advance their ability to eventually deploy a nuclear weapon on a long-range missile," said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the nongovernment Arms Control Association.

Analysts caution that only so much can be determined from satellite imagery, and it's very difficult to fully discern North Korea's plans. This is especially true for nuclear test preparations, which are often done deep within a mountain. North Korea, for instance, took many by surprise when it launched its rocket this month only several days after announcing technical problems.

Although there's no sign of an imminent nuclear test, U.S. and South Korean officials worry that Pyongyang could conduct one at any time.

Analysis of GeoEye and Digital Globe satellite photos from Dec. 13 and earlier, provided to The Associated Press by 38 North, the website for the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, said scientists are "determined to maintain a state of readiness" at the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Facility after repairing flood damage.

The nuclear speculation comes as South Korea's conservative president-elect, Park Geun-hye, prepares to take office in February, and as young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un marks his one-year anniversary as supreme commander.

Kim has consolidated power since taking over after his father, Kim Jong Il, died Dec. 17, 2011, and the rocket launch is seen as a major internal political and popular boost for the 20-something leader.

Some analysts, however, question whether Kim will risk international, and especially Chinese, wrath and sure sanctions by quickly conducting a nuclear test.

The election of Park in South Korea and Barack Obama's re-election to a second term as U.S. president could "prompt North Korea to try more diplomacy than military options," said Chang Yong-seok, an analyst at the Institute for Peace Affairs, a private think tank in Seoul. "I think we'll see North Korea more focused on economic revival than on nuclear testing next year."

The 38 North analysis said the North "may be able to trigger a detonation in as little as two weeks, once a political decision is made to move forward." But the report by Jack Liu, Nick Hansen and Jeffrey Lewis also said it was unclear whether water seepage from a tunnel entrance at the site was under control. Water could hurt a nuclear device and the sensors needed to monitor a test.

The analysis also identified what it called a previously unidentified structure that could be meant to protect sensitive equipment from bad weather.

"We don't have a crystal ball that will tell us when the North will conduct its third nuclear test," said Joel Wit, a former U.S. State Department official and now editor of 38 North. "But events over the next few months, such as the U.N. reaction to Pyongyang's missile test and the North's unfolding policy toward the new South Korean government, may at least provide us with some clues."

Another unknown is how China, the North's only major ally, would respond to calls for tighter sanctions. Washington views more pressure from Beijing as pivotal if diplomatic pressure is going to force change in Pyongyang.

Even if Beijing signs on to U.N. punishment if the North conducts a test, there may be less hurt for Pyongyang than Washington wants.

The impact of tougher sanctions would be "a drop in the bucket compared with the tidal wave of China-North Korean trade" that has risen sharply since 2008, even as inter-Korean trade has remained flat, said John Park, a Korea expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Trade figures show North Korea's deepening dependence on China. Pyongyang's trade with Beijing surged more than 60 percent last year, reaching $5.63 billion, according to South Korea's Statistics Korea. China accounted for 70 percent of North Korea's annual trade in 2011, up from 57 percent in 2010.

North Korea's 2006 nuclear test had an estimated explosive yield of 1 kiloton. The Los Alamos National Laboratory estimated in 2011 that the North's test on May 25, 2009, which followed U.N. condemnation of an April long-range rocket launch, had a minimum yield of 5.7 kilotons. The atomic bomb that hit Nagasaki at the end of World War II was about 21 kilotons.

Both North Korean tests used plutonium for fissile material. Without at least one more successful plutonium test, it's unlikely that Pyongyang could have confidence in a miniaturized plutonium design, according to an August paper by Frank Pabian of Los Alamos and Siegfried Hecker of Stanford University.

North Korea's small plutonium stockpile is sufficient for four to eight bombs, they wrote, but it may be willing to sacrifice some if it can augment information from the previous tests. Pabian and Hecker predicted that Pyongyang may simultaneously test both plutonium and highly enriched uranium devices.

A uranium test would worry the international community even more, as it would confirm that North Korea, which would need months to restart its shuttered plutonium reactor, has an alternative source of fissile material based on uranium enrichment. North Korea unveiled a previously secret uranium enrichment plant in November 2010.

"Whether and when North Korea conducts another nuclear test will depend on how high a political cost Pyongyang is willing to bear," Pabian and Hecker wrote.

Another test would also undermine Pyongyang's assertion that its long-range rocket launches are for a peaceful space program and not what outsiders see as the development of ballistic missiles that could eventually deliver nuclear weapons.

On the same day as this month's rocket launch, an unidentified North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman told state media that a hostile U.S. response to a failed launch in April of this year had forced Pyongyang "to re-examine the nuclear issue as a whole."

The statement was a clear threat to detonate a nuclear device ahead of any U.N. Security Council action, said Baek Seung-joo, an analyst at the state-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul.
