'Shore' spinoff gets thumbs up from Jersey City

Snooki and JWoww will move inland from the "Shore" to Jersey City for their spin-off.

New Jersey is a big state. Big enough to contain both "Jersey Shore" haters and fans.

And the new ground zero for fans? Jersey City, otherwise known as the soon-to-be home of Snooki and JWoww's "Shore" spinoff.

"We welcome any media attention to our city," Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy told WNYW-TV after approving a permit for the show. "We want the world to see what we have here in Jersey City, and if the two young ladies here bring their film cameras, abide by the laws and regulations, I think it'll work out great for all concerned. And my concern is to market this city."

But does Healy know what he's let himself in for? He put emphasis on how the ladies will have to obey the laws, which Snooki, who arrested for public drunkenness during "Shore's" third season, hasn't always done.

Healy seems prepared for such events should they arise, noting that the women will have "a couple of Jersey City cops following them to make sure that they're not bothered by others and that they stay on the right path." He hastened to add that those police officers will be paid for by the show producers, 495 Productions, "not the Jersey City taxpayers."

The approval comes after the mayor of Hoboken refused to issue permits for a spin-off and gave the show a smackdown at the same time earlier this month. Mayor Dawn Zimmer called the production, "an attractive nuisance causing crowds to assemble at every hour of the day and night, additional traffic congestion, attendant noise associated with large public gatherings and unacceptable lessening of the quality of life for the local residents and businesses."

Healy doesn't share those concerns.

"If these young ladies can pull this film off, and this show off without bothering their neighbors, without breaking any of our laws here in the state of New Jersey, I think it can be a good thing for all concerned," he said.

So where will Snooks and JWoww call home in Jersey City? According to the New York Daily News, the producers' permit allows them to shoot for six weeks in a converted two-story former firehouse. Mayor Healy revealed it was "a stone's throw from City Hall."
