It was a Mac Miller kind of night at the Woodie Awards in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. The Blue Slide Park MC not only dominated the stage with a killer performance, but he also took home the coveted Woodie of the Year award and the Performing Woodie award for best live act.
Miller celebrated his big night with a crowd-rocking rendition of his hit "Party on 5th Ave.," as well as an announcement about his upcoming mixtape, Macadelic, which is slated to drop next week. "I've worked so hard every day for the last five years and winning tonight means people recognize what I'm doing," said Mac Mill in accepting his big honor. "I'm really thankful. This is a huge win for my fans and me."
Miller, who is about to start his "Macadelic Tour," also blessed the crowd with renditions of "Smile Back," "Donald Trump" and "Loud." Fellow rapper MGK didn't go home empty handed, as he cradled the emerging artist "Breaking Woodie" hardware. "Thanks to my fans ... This is an award the world didn't want us to win but we did it together. Congrats to the fans and f--k me," said a humbled MGK.
The first-ever EDM Effect Woodie was handed over to Calvin Harris for the smash breakthrough of his hit with Rihanna, "We Found Love" and Hollywood royalty Drew Barrymore shared the Best Video Woodie for her directorial work on "Our Deal (Extended Version)," from Best Coast.
"Thanks to MTV. There is no venue or company like them," said Barrymore. "I wanted to tell a story set to the dreamy sounds of Best Coast's music. I am lucky to have had this opportunity!!! I hope I get another!"
MTV and mtvU will air the half-hour "2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Special" on Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT, showcasing some of the best "Woodie Awards" performances by Santigold, Mac Miller and Steve Aoki, in addition to celebrating the night's winners. The special will also feature appearances from B.o.B, J.Cole, Cobra Starship, MGK, Vanessa Hudgens, Chiddy Bang, Kat Graham, and Mike Posner, with each sharing their love for the night's nominees.
The live portion of the show also featured Santigold working up the crowd with a set that included "Go!," "L.E.S. Artistes" and new single, "Disparate Youth." In addition, Skrillex, Porter Robinson, Flux Pavilion and Zedd stopped by the event to support fellow EDM superstar Aoki, who treated the audience to a series of surprises. First, he brought out Lil Jon for "Turbulence," then Dillion Francis took the stage with Aoki for "Steve Jobs" just before the two jumped in a raft to crowd-surf. Chiddy and Lil Jon came out for stirring rendition of "Emergency," just before Aoki closed the show with flying cakes and champagne.
Make sure to tune in on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT for the premiere of "2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Special," hosted by DJ Pauly D and Dev.
