Recon goggles gain Facebook integration and augmented reality at Google I/O (hands-on video)

Remember that Android SDK Recon Instruments finally unveiled for its heads-up display goggles? Well the company was showing off the fruits of its labor here at Google I/O 2012 with two demos -- specifically two-way Facebook integration and augmented reality using a Contour camera. In the first demo, the goggles are paired over Bluetooth with an app running on an Android phone. Each time you jump while snowboarding or skying, the accelerometer data from the goggles is sent to the handset which posts a graphic to Facebook showing the distance, height and duration of your flight. Any comments made to the post are then immediately relayed back to the heads-up display. The second demo uses a Contour camera attached to the goggles and paired via Bluetooth. As you look around, the output from the camera appears on the heads-up display augmented with labels showing the location and distance of the nearby train stations based on the compass and GPS data from the goggles. Pretty cool, eh? Check out the gallery below and hit the break for our two hands-on videos.

Fearing childbirth may prolong labor | WQAD.com ? Quad Cities ...

(CNN) ? Dr. Stuart Fischbein chuckled when he read the title of the press release: ?Women with a fear of childbirth endure a longer labor.?

The release was promoting a study published this week in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Researchers at Akershus University Hospital in Norway found women who feared giving birth were in labor for 1 hour and 32 minutes longer, on average, than those who had no fear.

?I?m glad there?s now evidence to say that,? Fischbein said, ?but it?s obvious.?

For those of us who aren?t OB/GYNs, it may seem more like a cruel joke. Women who are afraid of the pain and the possible medical complications associated with giving birth have to suffer through it longer?

Study author Dr. Samantha Salvesen Adams initially thought her team would find the prolonged labor could be explained by other factors ? women who feared birth the most were first time mothers, who are known to have longer labors anyway, or obstetric interventions like epidurals. But when those factors were taken into consideration, the difference in time between the fearless and the fearful was still 47 minutes.

?Mental stress is associated with physiological arousal and release of stress hormones,? Adams wrote in an e-mail. ?During labour, high levels of stress hormones may weaken uterine [contractions].?

In other words, the adrenaline released when a body is stressed stops the oxytocin hormone production that makes a woman?s uterus contract, slowing labor. It?s a natural, biological response to fear, Fischbein said.

Fischbein, who?s also a co-author of ?Fearless Pregnancy,? said women today are afraid of giving birth because they?re surrounded by horror stories.

?We have a society where sensationalism sells. They?re pounded with information [about] things that can go wrong with childbirth. Of course you develop fears.?

To understand Fischbein?s lack of surprise at the study results, you have to take a look at the way other mammals give birth. For example, when cats, dogs or horses are in labor, they find dark places to have their offspring in peace. They eat when they?re hungry, pace if they?re in pain and run if something comes near them.

Compare that to a hospital setting, where a woman is given ice chips, strapped to machines while laying in bed and surrounded by people who are constantly interrupting. Though the machines and medical personnel are sometimes necessary, Fischbein says the stress comes from being in an unfamiliar environment.

He recommends women find a doctor or midwife who will take the time to talk through their fears and dispense honest advice about the birthing process.

Could Congress jail Attorney General Eric Holder for contempt?

Congress has jailed those deemed in contempt before but never a sitting Cabinet official ? and not recently. Moreover, the few times Congress has locked down people within the Capitol, it has not turned out well for Congress.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / June 29, 2012

Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington in this June 12 file photo. Mr. Holder's refusal to release documents requested by a House panel led to two censure votes against him on Thursday.

The leaders of the House Government Oversight Committee traded barbed comments on the House floor. Republicans passionately argued that their quest was about providing closure to the family of US border agent Brian Terry, whose murder was linked to weapons from a ?gunwalking? operation in Arizona known as Fast and Furious. It was that operation that prompted Congress?s investigation into the Justice Department and Mr. Holder.

Democrats, lead by civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis (D) of Georgia arm-in-arm with House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D) of California, walked off the House floor during the contempt votes. They marched en masse to the lawn outside the Capitol to protest what they called a Republican ?kangaroo court? aimed not at investigating why guns were allowed to pass into the hands of Mexican drug cartels but, instead, at claiming Holder?s political scalp.

But one dramatic turn that didn?t come to pass? The House sending the sergeant-at-arms to arrest the attorney general and imprison him in the Capitol until it gets its way. That?s a move well within congressional rights with a contempt resolution, albeit one that hasn?t been tried in about a century.

Had the House tried to do so, it may have risked a showdown with executive branch police who protect Holder,?according to Josh Chafetz, a law professor at Cornell University.

And it?s not as if Congress has been terribly effective at jailing those it has held in contempt, according to Senate Historian Donald Ritchie?s book, ?Press Gallery,? and research by Mr. Chafetz, who is writing a book on congressional power.

In fact, it appears Holder might have had more fun being ?jailed? in Congress than facing House Government Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R) of California.

Building a Beautiful Home in the Country for Less - Idaho Real Estate

Rural LandAfter looking at all available rural properties for sale, are you still unsatisfied with what you have found? A great alternative to buying a home in the country is to build the home of your dreams on a piece of acreage in Middleton, Idaho.

Middleton Idaho Real Estate
Middleton has become an upscale and close-knit community in Canyon County, one of the fastest growing cities in the county. Middleton Idaho real estate is less expensive to purchase than it is in other cities. This is partially because property taxes are less in Canyon County, making Middleton a wise choice if you are seeking to build a custom home and looking to save money in the process.

Acreage
The size of the property for your new home will depend largely on your lifestyle choices. Do you own farm animals or horses? Do you want a large garden spot or space for a Recreational Vehicle? How about considering room to add onto your home in the future, or room for your kids to run? Have you reflected on how much space you want between you and your nearest neighbor? Be sure to ask your Middleton Idaho real estate agent for a copy of the protective Covenants and Restrictions (CC&R's) for the country communities you are interested in so that your investment is protected and perfect for your needs.

The Building Process
Finding a reputable builder may not be as difficult as you think. Your real estate agent is connected with many home builders who have already purchased Middleton Idaho real estate and are waiting to build your custom home. Acreage communities frequently provide home builders with lots specifically for this purpose.

Your first step will be to decide who will be building your home. Again, ask your realtor to facilitate this process, as he has done this many times professionally. The builder you choose will determine your choice of Middleton communities for your new home.

After choosing your lot, step 2 will be to meet with your builder and realtor to discover the floor plans that will be just right for you and your family. The best thing about building a home from the ground up is that you can customize everything from light switches and outlets to custom cabinets and closet space. The possibilities are endless!

Once you know the specifics of the home you want to build, step 3 will be to meet with your real estate agent and make an offer on the package deal. In addition to writing up the contract and legal paperwork, your realtor will coordinate the entire process between you and your builder from beginning to end.

Enjoy Your New Home
Building your dream home is a relatively easy process when it is approached in the right order and with the right professionals. And one way to be sure you are saving money in the process is to seek professionals with connections to Middleton Idaho real estate so you can enjoy the best value for your investment.

Google Launches Compute Engine To Take On Amazon Web Services

computeengineGoogle has spent the last decade building a huge amount of infrastructure to support its own services and applications. Now anyone will be able to take advantage of all that investment, as Google is rolling out a set of infrastructure-as-a-service products that could compete with industry heavyweight, Amazon Web Services. Google has already built one of the largest data centers and networks to connect those data centers. And in 2008, Google created App Engine, which Holzle said now supports over 1 million active apps and 7.5 billion hits per day. It's the largest public NoSQL data store in the world.

UK's thoroughly modern royals? Not exactly. Commoner Kate has to curtsy.

The British monarchy has raised eyebrows by updating a rulebook to include guidelines on how the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, who has no royal blood, must acknowledge the "blood princesses."

News that the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, the probable future queen of England, has been instructed to curtsy to her husband?s younger cousins has caused some surprise here, where she has quickly come to be regarded as one of the most senior members of the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth II has approved an update of the Order of Precedence in the Royal Household, a sort of manual of court rules, that has been amended to take into account the addition of Kate, who married Prince William last year.

The Order now states that Kate, who has no royal blood in her veins, must curtsy to the ?blood princesses?: the Princess Royal, Anne; Princess Alexandra, the granddaughter of George V; and the daughters of the Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie; when she is not accompanied by her husband.

When Kate is with William, she need not curtsy to the blood princesses, but even in his presence she must curtsy to the Queen and Prince Philip; her father-in-law Charles, the Prince of Wales; and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.

It has come as a surprise to some that the royal family should spell out such an arcane piece of protocol at a time when it is seeking to project a more modern image. Kate, with her relaxed, easy manner, is considered to have been great asset in this endeavor.

The royal family is also attempting to pare itself down and present a more compact group of key family members at public events. During the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations earlier this month only Prince Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and Harry joined the queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Ten years earlier, at the Golden Jubilee events, all the queen?s four children stood alongside her.

"It is quite apparent that the more distant royals are being phased out, in terms of their duties and privileges, although it will be done slowly,? says Liz Brewer, an expert on etiquette among the British upper classes. ?But this is the form, this is how things are done, and there are certain rules that you follow. Once you start to say, let?s forget that one, the whole thing starts to fall apart.?

She cites as an example of this general rule the relaxation of protocol at Royal Ascot ? an annual horse race attended by the queen, a racing fanatic ? governing which people are invited into the royal enclosure.

?Once those rules were relaxed the dress code got more and more inappropriate until you had people with short dresses flying up and all that sort of thing,? says Ms. Brewer.

This year, the organizers sought to undo the damage with an exacting new dress code that specified skirts of knee-length or longer and hats ?with a base of four inches or more.?

The order was last updated in 2005, following Prince Charles?s marriage to Camilla Parker-Bowles. That change clarified that neither Princess Anne nor Princess Alexandra would have to curtsy to Camilla when Prince Charles was not in the room.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the new update of the order is whether Kate Middleton is expected to curtsy to the younger princesses when the royal family is relaxing in private. If she is, it must come as a relief that?Debretts, which has published a heavy ?Peerage and Baronetage? tome since the 18th?century, defines the curtsy as ?just a short bob (not a full ground-sweeping dip).?

Notifications get a makeover in Jelly Bean

Jelly Bean Notifications

Notifications are just one of the areas of the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean UI that are getting a makeover. Buttons for callback are included now within the notification drawer when a missed call shows up. Pretty neat.

That's only the beginning though. Notifications are now expandable. Essentially, it's like putting widgets into the notification bar. They auto expand and collapse, and there is a lot of emphasis on functionality outside of the related applications. Google+ notifications can show up the pictures within the notification tray itself, for example.

Another example showed up the Pulse news app notifications. Currently we just get a boring old message telling us there are new stories. In Jelly Bean, it's pretty much as though the application itself is sat in the notification bar. Slick. Notifications just got a whole lot more interesting.

Pioneer SMA wireless speakers put AirPlay, HTC Connect in one happy family (update: hands-on photos)

Pioneer SMA wireless speakers put AirPlay, HTC Connect in one happy family update handson photos

Apple and HTC might be at each other's throats in court, but they're living in peace and harmony in Pioneer's world. The fresh new SMA wireless speaker line supports both Apple's AirPlay format and HTC Connect-certified DLNA to take audio over WiFi no matter whether it's coming from an iPhone or a One S. Proof that we can all get along is good in itself, but Pioneer is also throwing in Wireless Direct, a trick that turns the speaker into its own WiFi access point if it can't latch on to a nearby router. Pioneer's stratification of the range is dictated by whether you value freedom or raw power. The XW-SMA1 is the baseline with two 3-inch speakers and a 3 / 4-inch tweeter, with a bass reflex port doing its best to mimic a subwoofer; the XW-SMA3 is the exact same with a lithium-ion battery good for six hours of cord-free play, and the XW-SMA4 goes battery-free but rolls in a proper 4-inch subwoofer and an extra tweeter. The lot arrives in August and costs either $299 for an SMA1 or $399 for either of its premium siblings.

Zach Honig contributed to this report.

98% La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion)

All Critics (59) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (57) | Rotten (1) | DVD (9)

It's among the most understated anti-war films ever made, effortlessly humanistic but far too subtle to indulge in preaching.

A model of simplicity and grace, with emotional effects that move you when you least expect it, the kind of great film that only a master can pull off.

It's still one of the key humanist expressions to be found in movies: sad, funny, exalting, and glorious.

It's an excellent film, with Renoir's usual looping line and deft shifts of tone, though today the balance of critical opinion has shifted in favor of the greater darkness and filigree of The Rules of the Game.

An artistically masterful feature, the picture breathes the intimate life of warriors on both sides during the [First] World War.

Renoir has created a strange and interesting film, but he owes much to his cast.

a monumental humanist work

Its very simplicity of utterance gives it a purity that makes other films that try to express similar sentiments feel forced and obvious.

Funny, heart-wrenching, nail-biting, caustic and profound, touting the futility of armed combat while turning imprisonment and escape into a microcosm for society's aspirations and contradictions.

Renoir's 1937 anti-war masterpiece created a new genre, the POW movie, and with his 1939 La R?gle du jeu constitutes a diptych of unparalleled excellence.

A timeless classic of acting and filmmaking genius that uses the artificiality of war to explore the very construct of society, and is a classic must-see.

The great illusion is that these men of the officer class are somehow different from the masses who suffered the bloodiest of wars. Renoir proves that they are not.

A vividly humanist, anti-war classic.

A sorrowful, acutely thoughtful, and wholly imperishable masterpiece...

Tragic. Moving. Funny. A pure joy.

The film makes its moral point about the futility of combat by emphasising the interconnectedness of all humanity via such shared experiences as hunger, desire and friendship. It's also a ripping yarn with a vein of charming and sometimes risqu? humour.

La Grande Illusion retains its power as an example of European camaraderie and co-operation.

It ranks proudly alongside The Rules Of The Game as Renoir at his stunning best.

La Grande Illusion is a sublimely poignant and lucidly insightful commentary on the social legacy of the Great War in Europe.

European Science Foundation calls for support of social science research in Central and Eastern Europe

Strasbourg, 26 June 2012 - A new forward looking report, 'Central and Eastern Europe Beyond Transition: Convergence and Divergence in Europe', has been published today by the European Science Foundation. The report aims to identify new themes for social science research in and on CEE, which can be promoted and endorsed by national and European funding institutions.

In this forward looking exercise, three interdisciplinary thematic clusters have been identified: Populations in change; New Geographies of Europe; and Social Cohesion. Populations in change aims at looking into how out/in migration, regional population change, ethnic minorities and integration all affect the basic structure of CEE populations. New Geographies of Europe focuses on the 'return to Europe', overcoming the West-East divide, on the influence of cohesion funds on local governance and on the expanding borders of Europe eastwards. Social Cohesion focuses on the degree of socio-economic transformation that post-communist Europe has undergone over the last 20 years, especially in terms of social mobility and social trust.

Peter Weiss, ambassador of the Slovak Republic in Hungary commented: "Rethinking of social science research in and on Central and Eastern Europe, setting new frontiers in social sciences and identifying main research challenges and subjects of cooperation between academics from Western and Eastern European countries is, without a discussion, one of the basic preconditions for overcoming the recent crisis in the EU".

The last 25 years have witnessed some of the most profound political, social and economic changes in Europe's history. The fall of communism at the end of the 1980s not only reshaped relationships within the continent, but also provided fascinating insights into the potential for, and limitations of, the large-scale reshaping of society.

"Social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe were seriously distorted during the communist period." explained Professor Daniel David, vice president of the Romanian Research Council (CNCS). "This Report could help us for integrating social sciences research from Central and Eastern Europe in the international area".

The report also outlines eight structural recommendations for social science research in and on CEE. These underline the need to ensure a stronger presence of CEE scholars and CEE social research issues in international level research projects. They also highlight real needs in terms of the development of research infrastructure and human capital and call for the implementation of good practices in terms of governance, scientific excellence and independence.

"The Forward Look provides a well-elaborated insight and recommendations on the place of Social Sciences and Humanities in Central and Eastern Europe and how these could and should interface with the international research project level" Robert Burmanjer, Head of Social Sciences and Humanities Unit at the European Commission commented.

The report was also praised by Karin Liebhart, president of the Central European Political Science Association: "I'd like to congratulate the entire team that worked on the report at hand. It is an excellent base for further discussion and contains a lot of detailed information and valuable insights."

Roy Nelson challenges Mike Russow to a win or leave (the heavyweight division) bout

In a heavyweight division of the UFC filled with fighters are who built like a Greek god, Roy Nelson and Mike Russow don't exactly fit the mold.? After watching Fabricio Werdum knock out Russow at UFC 147, Nelson was struck with matchmaking inspiration.

"I want Mike Russow and loser goes to 205 or becomes Dana White Rich. Let make it happen @danawhite," Nelson tweeted.

Both men appear to carry more body fat than most of their counterparts and look like they could cut down a weight class. They also both have recent losses to Werdum, as Nelson dropped a decision to him in February.

This isn't the first time Nelson has contemplated a drop down. In March, he said he would try to get to light heavyweight if he added 100,000 Facebook likes. However, he abandoned the plan when he was booked for the all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146.

A drop for Russow, who weighed in at 246 lbs. for UFC 147, may be a bit more difficult than for Nelson. In addition to being a pro fighter, he is a full-time officer in the Chicago Police Department. He doesn't train full-time, like Nelson does.

Of course, the difficulty in dropping down would also give Russow more motivation to win the fight. Do you want to see this fight? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

NBA star?s gay slur shows pros don?t know Twitter

By Bob Sullivan

All winter long, New York Knicks star player Amar?e Stoudemire plays in front of packed basketball arenas. Often, when on the road, he must stand on the foul line and hit critical shots while ignoring taunts screamed at him by 20,000 or more enemy fans.?

So why couldn't he ignore one comparatively tame tweet from a Knicks fan critical of his play?

Stoudemire is the latest professional athlete to land in social media hot water after he replied privately on Twitter this weekend to the fan. In just 140 characters, he managed to squeeze in two words we won't publish on msnbc.com, including one hateful gay slur: ?"F#&# you.? I don't have to do anything, F#@."

The recipient took a screen capture of the private direct message and posted it publicly. Within hours, a typical Internet firestorm ensued. The NBA now says it is investigating.

The fan, who identifies himself as 19 years old on his Twitter account, loves the Knicks so much he uses the team logo as his background image. But he's not innocent.? He taunted Stoudemire, who he says is one of his favorite players, by urging him to "come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season" -- nothing wrong there -- but closed the note like this: "mannnnnn deadasss!!!"

While no one wants to be in the business of ranking foul language, clearly Stoudemire upped the ante with his response.? Literally and figuratively, Stoudemire should have been the bigger man.

The fan has declined interviews, saying, "I don't want to make this situation any bigger than it is," a mature response that Stoudemire could easily have employed this weekend.

It's time professional athletes realized that social media is a lot bigger than they think it is.

Stoudemire's Twitter transgression is hardly the first, and it won't be the last.? It is, however, shocking that an athlete being paid more than $20 million annually could be thrown off his game so easily.? And it's almost unbelievable that professional sports teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars crafting their image leave so much to chance on Twitter and Facebook.

It's not as if the sports leagues can't control social media usage -- the National Basketball Association prohibits players from Tweeting 45 minutes before games, during games, and after games until media leave the locker room. Other leagues have similar restrictions.?

Still, Twitter regret is a fixture in the sports world. Then Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined last season for complaining about umpires on Twitter. Several NFL players were criticized for saying they were enjoying the NFL lockout last summer. And NBA pariah Gilbert Arenas was fined after he tweeted that he would be "direct sexting in no time" last year.

Stoudemire's direct response to a fan raised the stakes however. ?His casual use of a gay slur also shows just how far the NBA has to go to make its environment accepting of all sexual orientations.? The NBA might look to the NHL for inspiration; last year, the hockey league joined the impressive "You Can Play" initiative after a team general manager's son became the first openly gay player in the minor leagues.? The player, Brendan Burke, died in a car crash in 2010.

In addition to the offensive language, it's amazing that some athletes fail to prepare for the reputation risk which comes from social media, and that professional leagues haven't managed to control it. The contrast with college sports here is stark; across the country, many colleges are trying to ban athletes from using social media, or hiring technology companies to monitor them closely.?

This approach has raised serious First Amendment issues, but it at least shows the schools are taking the risks seriously.

There is a distinct difference, however, when a professional sports team pays an athlete millions of dollars as part of a profit-making venture. Schools shouldn?t force teenage lacrosse players off Facebook, and they probably don?t have the right to such a free speech restriction, but a pro team can surely control how its highly compensated employee interacts with the public. ?

The Twitter regret issue should be interesting to watch during the upcoming London Olympic games, where a combination of highly paid professionals and amateurs, along with very excited family members, might lead to some embarrassing social media moments. Already, famous British swimmer and former silver medalist Sharron Davies is calling for a Twitter blackout by U.K. athletes during the games.

?It?s always something that is a bit of a risk, that some silly story would overshadow the good stuff we were doing,? Davies told the Mirror. ?For that short period, a month, let?s not take a risk.?

For his part, Stoudemire did apologize, seemingly without prompting, several hours later.

"I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again," he wrote in another private message posted by the recipient.

Stoudemire had a frustrating, injury-riddled season that ended with him embarrassingly punching a glass door after a playoff loss to eventual league champion Miami Heat. Angry punches and glass don't mix well. The resulting injury caused Stoudemire to miss a playoff game and limited him for the rest of the series.

Frustration and the instant gratification of social media are an even more toxic mixture. If someone paid me $20 million a year, I'd pay for 24/7 public relations help with my Twitter account.? Seems a sensible way to keep the fouls on the court.

Turkey turns to NATO over Syrian attack

ANKARA/AMMAN (Reuters) - Turkey accused Syria on Sunday of shooting down a military reconnaissance jet in international airspace without warning and called a NATO meeting to discuss a response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Amid growing acrimony between the once-friendly neighbors, Syria said its forces had shot dead "terrorists" infiltrating its territory from Turkey, which along with Western and Arab nations has backed the cause of Syrians fighting Assad.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the search for two missing pilots was still under way, in coordination with the Syrian authorities. He denied it was a "joint" operation.

He said the RF-4 Phantom jet had been clearly marked as Turkish and dismissed Syria's assertion it had not identified the aircraft before opening fire.

Davutoglu said he also planned to set out Turkey's case at the United Nations Security Council where Western powers are seeking, against Russian and Chinese opposition, to push through a motion that could allow stronger measures against Assad.

Moscow fears this might lead to military action that could undermine its interests in Syria.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton strongly condemned Syria's "brazen and unacceptable act" and vowed close U.S. cooperation with Turkey as part of "our broader efforts to promote a democratic transition in Syria."

The shooting down of the jet "is yet another reflection of the Syrian authorities' callous disregard for international norms, human life, and peace and security," she said in a statement following a conversation on Saturday with Davutoglu.

What began as demonstrations against Assad developed last year into armed rebellion, tipping the country towards a sectarian civil war, with thousands already killed across Syria.

Syrian tanks and artillery shelled the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Sunday, killing at least 20 people in the second day of bombardment in the oil-producing region, amid heavy fighting with anti-Assad insurgents, opposition activists said.

Davutoglu said the jet was unarmed and had been on a solo mission to test domestic radar systems, but acknowledged it had briefly crossed Syrian airspace 15 minutes before it was hit.

"Our plane was shot at a distance of 13 sea miles from Syria's border in international airspace," Davutoglu said.

"According to the radar images, our plane lost contact with headquarters after it was hit and because the pilot lost control, it crashed into Syrian waters after making abnormal movements," he said. "Throughout this entire period no warning was made to our plane."

Some analysts said the aircraft, in violating Syrian airspace at a time of great sensitivity, could in fact have been testing Syria's Russian-supplied radar and air defenses, which would be an obstacle to any possible Western armed action.

Turkey is prickly about its own airspace and that of north Cyprus, where Turkish troops are deployed. Only last month it scrambled jets to intercept an Israeli plane it said had violated northern Cypriot airspace and demanded an explanation.

The foreign ministry said Turkey knew the coordinates of its jet's wreckage, 1,300 meters underwater, but had not found it.

Syria, formally at war with Israel and the target of Israeli air raids in the past, has said the plane was flying fast and low, just one kilometer off its coast when it was shot down as an unidentified intruder. It was only later found to be Turkish.

"TERRORIST" INFILTRATORS

Turkey shelters the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA) and hosts 32,000 Syrian refugees on its southeastern border with Syria, some 50 km (30 miles) from where the Turkish aircraft was shot down. But it denies providing arms for the insurgents.

Syria's state news agency said Syrian forces had confronted "terrorists" who had crossed the Turkish border into the coastal province of Latakia and killed several of them on Sunday.

Syria and Turkey share a border 900 km (550 miles) long.

As if to underline its military reach, Turkey's military announced it had carried out air strikes against nine Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq in the past three days.

Turkey has often bombed Kurdish fighters seeking more autonomy in southeast Turkey and has even sent ground forces across the border to attack their bases in Iraq.

Around 8,000 Syrian Kurdish refugees have crossed into Iraqi Kurdistan, fleeing the conflict at home, Masoud Barzani, president of the autonomous region, told a news conference.

Turkey's hostility to Assad has mounted steadily since the Syrian leader ignored its advice to enact democratic reform in response to protests that erupted 16 months ago as part of a wider Arab awakening, rather than violently suppressing them.

Assad's security state, dominated by his minority Alawite sect, is now embroiled in a bloody fight for survival against rebels mostly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority.

NATO envoys will meet on Tuesday at Turkey's request under Article 4 of the military alliance's founding treaty, which provides for states to "consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened".

It stops short of the explicit mention of possible armed responses cited in Article 5.

Britain's foreign minister, William Hague, condemned Syria's downing of the Turkish jet as an "outrageous act" and said his country was ready to support robust action against Damascus by the United Nations Security Council.

SYRIA'S ALLIES

Russia and China have previously blocked any firm measures by the council, twice vetoing draft resolutions on Syria.

Moscow, which said on Sunday it had "no doubt" there were attempts at regime change in Syria, is one of Assad's main arms suppliers and a firm opponent of any outside intervention there. It says Western powers would invite an unpredictable spread of violence if they attempted any intervention in the country.

A ship carrying Russian helicopters to Syria, which turned back after its insurance was cut, is expected to resume its journey accompanied by at least one other vessel, Interfax reported, citing a military source.

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi condemned the shooting down of the Turkish jet on an "inoffensive flight" as "a further extremely serious and unacceptable action by the Assad regime".

European Union foreign ministers will discuss the Syria crisis, as well as Iran and Egypt, in Luxembourg on Monday.

In a telephone conversation with Davutoglu, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, whose government is a staunch backer of Assad, said he hoped both sides would "settle the issue peacefully to maintain regional stability".

Iraq has described the incident as a serious escalation that demonstrated how Syria's conflict could spread beyond its frontiers and open up ethnic and other tensions in the region.

It remains unclear exactly what the Turkish jet had been doing: a reconnaissance mission to support Syrian rebels or to test Syria's air defenses are among the theories. Syrian anti-aircraft gunners may also have been jumpy after a defecting Syrian pilot flew his fighter to Jordan the previous day.

While the incident has aggravated tensions and exposed the risks of Syria's crisis spilling over its borders, neither Ankara nor Damascus seems likely to seek a military showdown.

"What all this tells us is that there are a lot of 'fishy' tactics and strategies going on in the region, with numerous players behind many curtains," said Hayat Alvi, lecturer in Middle Eastern studies at the U.S. Naval War College.

"Nonetheless, the idea that it would be in Turkey's and Syria's respective national interests to engage in military conflict with each other is not plausible. Both sides would have too much to lose and very little to gain."
