Bakersfield College: 6 pct. drop in spring enrollment

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) ? Bakersfield College reports a decrease in enrollment.

Blaming the drop on state budget cuts, BC says it will begin its spring semester with 6 percent fewer students.

Course offerings have also been cut by 94, down from 1,520 a year ago, as the school restructures to focus on core and transfer disciplines, such as mathematics, sciences and English. That move is designed to better allocate available financial resource, the school says.

Enrollment figures for spring:

  • BC overall - 15,301
  • Delano Campus - 1,855
  • Weill Institute - 365

"Bakersfield College continues to work to determine the most appropriate set of courses, which will provide educational opportunities, which meet the needs of students," says Sonya Christian, president of Bakersfield College, in a Friday news release.
